What Grits

I'm curious about this too. I have several tools designed around the use of adhesive backed paper but I can only locate 5" and 6" round disks. I have to cut them up and waste a bunch of it. I'd like to locate continuous rolls of it in the same grits as Filippo wants...so far...no luck.

I've used the Mirka with adhesive back but not the 3M or Norton so I can't compare them. The Mirka from my local woodworking boutique is less than 3M from Stewmac but Stewmac is not known for always being the lowest priced supplier.

It's decent paper but not as good as the Norton 3X regular (non-adhesive back). Is the gold reserve the same as the 3X but with adhesive?

The Mirka is an excellent material and I have sold a ton of it over the years , The problem with mirka " as a dealer" is they have crazy expectations of what a dealer must stock quarterly .. they want me to purchase ( 25 ) cases quarterly to get best price , thats 250 boxes or rolls etc: every three months . and they tend to play with pricing alot . If you have access to it , it is good sandpaper

Carborundum abrasives has 2-3/4" psa as well

Norton has it also .

And for those who dont know it . St Gobain abrasives owns both Norton and Carborundum .

I've been using the Stikit Gold and the Klingspoor rolls of adhesive backed paper. Klingspoor sticks better, and is good paper. It's not cheap either, but cheaper than the 3M. However when I re-bought a bunch at a time, someone was having a big sale on Stikit Gold, and I bought a roll of each grit.

For adhesive backed, I use Klingspoor.

check on their web site, they often have bulk packs of rolls sold in 5lb packages for very reasonable price. If you aren't looking for a specific grit, these very attractively priced.

not sure if that link will work, it is on their web page under "bargain boxes"

you can also get normal sandpaper in mixed grits 5 or 10 lb boxes for general purpose use.

Kevin, which Mirka paper did you have - Gold or Royal? The Mirka price is competitive with Norton.

Going from memory but I'm pretty sure it's just the Gold.

I've only bought one roll of 150 or maybe 180 to do some light touch up sanding on an Ebony fingerboard with MOP dots.

I can't vouch for any of the PSA rolls but here's a place that I use for non-adhesive sheets, and they carry Mirka - http://supergrit.com/products/products_ ... ve-psa.asp

Filippo : Lee Valley has 2.5" rools 30' long at about $16. 80 grit through 220 grit.

Filippo: Agree it is pricey but for me I don't use much of it and I have a store right at hand. Good luck in your search.

Tom - that's pricey, actually. I'm finding adhesive backed 2 3/4" for $1/yard including shipping. That's more what I'm looking to spend.

JD - is this the adhesive backed paper you are using?

This is $1/yard not delivered, but nice because it is in 10 yard length (instead of 25 or 40!). Flat rate shipping at $8 too. So at $10/roll for however many rolls plus $8 would be good. But what's the quality like? Others use this? It is a stearate AO paper, and B/C back is good.

Filippo

The link you provided is the same stuff, but I normally buy the close-out bargain box that they currently list as 5lb for $18. They include a range of grits all in decent lengths and widths. They also frequently offer free shipping which makes it a no-brainer. Very good quality paper -I use Klingspoor papers for almost everything from hand sanding, ROS, sharpening as well as on the Drum sander. It is on par with the premium Mirka and 3M papers and much better than Norton.

The PSA Mirka royal is good, but not as good as the 3M Gold. Klingspor, not as good as the Mirka. Norton Champagne (A275) is what you want if you don't like the 3M Gold. You get what you pay for. I find the 3M does not load easily, has a very good adhesive and lasts longer than all the other brands mentioned, only the Norton A275 is marginally superior.

Filippo,

I know this about adhesive backed paper,
But I have always favored velcro Backed paper.
Years ago Klingspor use to sell a solid cork block with precut sterete paper so I bought one and this is all I have used. I now buy the sterate paper in rolls:

I have been using Industrial Abrasives out of Reading PA. They have a PSA no loading paper ( White ) that does a great job and I would be lost without . They have a number of sizes and grits available . I also get my belts there .

Just my 2 cents...

I've been using Porter Cable stuff that comes in 30' rolls for years if for nothing else because my local tool/nail supplier carries it and I can order whatever I want whenever I need it...

I get 3m gold from ebay, have previously sold excess in the classifieds.

I wonder about a group buy, a la D'addario...
