Post subject:  Martin upper bout?

Hello, Hoping someone (John Hall?) can tell me the upper bout depth on a Martin Dreadnought. Would the 18 and 28 be the same? I'm doing one with a friend and all I have to work with is a old stripped off Martin top that's mostly there. I've been able to find the rest of the necessary dimensions.

Thanks,
Danny

d-18's and d-28's are the same size, except the d-18 has thinner sides.

Hi Danny,

The early 70's Martin D-18 that's open in my shop right now measures 3 & 11/16" at the neck block (neck joint) and 4 & 11/16" at the tail block. Those are the actual dimensions of the blocks themselves not including the back or top plate thickness.

Thanks Cal! One day we'll have to try to link up in Kelowna. I was just back for a wedding a couple weeks ago. I lived there for about 8 very fun years.

Thanks again.

Actually the D18 and D28 start out the same . Why you will sometimes see the D 18 thinner is that mahogany sands easier than the rosewood . I have seem the mahogany as thin as .065 and as heavy as .085 . D 28 often in .075 to .090

I found this on the Web somewhere, I'm not sure if it's correct but it's what I use.

Thank you for the info. I guess I'm making a 28 since it's Bolivian Rosewood. :) I wonder if they thinned it more for bending?

Thanks for the chart Scott. I did look around a bit but didn't see that one.

Happy Building,
Danny

I find that the size charts even on the martin site are not 100% correct. The best example is the OM and 000 14 fret. The width at the lower bout is 15 3/16 or 15 3/8 inches I have to check not the 15 that is stated .
