Hey all I always enjoy these threads, so thought I'd start. I have been doing quite a few commissions over the last little while and so I've decided to take a break and build some things for my own pleasure that I've been wanting to do for awhile. One is an electric out of Sycamore and Lutz that I'm just doing a Varnish finish on right now. Haven't used Varnish in quite awhile and I'm liking it. But as a result of the electric, I had some left over Sycamore and Lutz. Enough for a uke. Here's some pictures. Neil ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

After several years of reading the OLF and anything that I could get my hands on, I started my first guitar. The neck is laminated walnut and curly maple. The back and sides are black walnut and the top is Sitka. Wish me luck. Pals, Vic |

The Walnut is a little harder to work for a neck than mahogany, but looks good I think. Neil ![]() ![]() |

I'm finally getting some work done on #10. I had to lay up the veneer for new tiles - 11 logs of 16 layers. Finally got that done, now I can get back to the guitar. Attachment: P1050985 (Large).JPG Attachment: P1050987 (Large).JPG Attachment: P1050989 (Large).JPG Attachment: P1050995 (Large).JPG

Finally getting back in the shop to finish a replacement neck for a 60's Univox 12-string. Original neck was too twisted to save. Shane hooked me up with the Gotoh tuners; they work smoothly and have the right look. Original tuners are worn out. Neck is now in finish, I'm working to color match it to the original. As soon as this neck is done I have a size 0 and a 000 cutaway that are ready for binding. Attachment: ToddNeckTuners.JPG

Finished carving the neck for the tele. It took me about 2 hours with a rasp, files, and sanpaper. This was my first attemtp EVER at doing anything like this, so it's not perfect, but I'm pleased with the result. I also finished sanding everything to get it ready for finish. I think I'm going with Deft spray can lacquer. For this project (with its rustic nature) I think it will be fine. I still have to stain the sides so that they aren't so stark against the patina in the top and back, but I anticipate spraying the lacquer by Friday and having it set up by a week from then. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

BobC's son didn't quite know what to make of my request for ebony bindings that weren't all black, since most folks want them all black. He was glad to oblige, of course. Pat |

That's a great idea, Pat. I imagine it would offer a little character that would distinguish them from plastic. |
