Never heard of that before. Don't see any benefits of doing this.... maybe it would be to prolong the life of the hide glue

Hi! I heard that Somogyi is cutting his HHG with 10% of fish glue. Does anybody here tried it? Pros and cons? Thanks Francis |

Things may have changed, but when we were there Ervin was using Titebond for all of his gluing. |

called going with the flow . I would be be suspicious of this as Fish glue is a cold glue and HHG is Hot , The heat may be detrimental to the fish glue . I don't see an advantage . Use the fish glue if you want more open time . I use both but do find fish glue more friendly to work with . Fish also is a bit more temperamental to get apart as it takes a bit more heat to get apart . I think it dries harder that HHG . |

My take is that they are both collagen glues, and might well mix fine. Fish is only a cold glue because of the property of the particular collagens involved. If you heat it, it becomes more runny, and if you put your glue in a warm bath for a few minutes, it's easier to stir and shake, which you should do before every use. HHG just happens to be a collagen mixture that is not liquid at room temperature. Mixing the two might well give a longer open time, without negatively impacting the strength of the glue. Both dry to pretty much glass-like hardness vs being flexible like some glues. Again, just my take on it. Might just have to try it though. |

Fish soup gels at room temperature if it's thick enough, but thinner than what I would like to glue woods. I know there're people who made jelly from fish scales and it's much cheaper than gelatine. I never believe the commercial liquid fish glue is liquid just because that's what fish glue is suppose to be. |

I've been using fish glue for everything, but I need to switch to hide for gluing dentallones just because it grabs fast. |

The fish glue I got from Lee Valley does not dry as hard as HHG does. Perhaps it will be harder at RH 40% but definitely not at 70%. I suspect there's some kind of additive in LV fish glue so it behaves(and looks) more like the liguid hide glue. The indoor RH here in southeren Taiwan(Tainan) is usually between 55~75%. It's 58% now. It can go just a hair below 40% in winter but there're a dozen or so days in a year that it goes ove 90%. Guitars made with FG don't last nearly as long as HHG or Titebond in such enviorment. And Tainan is already a relatively dry region in Taiwan. I might get some fish scale to make my own fish glue if my HG ran out. |
