Went to a sawyer I know to look for some cedar and cypress and was surprised to find that he happened to have this quite lovely piece of Black Walnut, supposedly from Michigan. As you can see it's almost 3" thick, about 13" wide and I think about 4' long. The guy that got it to him said that he picked it up from a pile of similar pieces to be BURNED! gaah Fortunately this piece was pulled from the fire and found it's way to me.
I paid........wait for it........30 BUCKS!!!!!! bliss I couldn't believe it! He's got some similar pieces from around here for prices just as crazy. If it's still there when I go back in a few weeks I'm snagging it all.

Good day! ;)

Walnut, the other dark wood!

Ha! That actually works! Most of the dark brown stuff round here is rosewood of some sort.

Ian, I don't know if you've ever worked with black walnut before, but I pretty sure you're going to love it.
Your board has some particularly nice color contrast.

Oh I love it. It's a bit heavy, but the colors are insane sometimes, carves easily, smells great, and has passable sound qualities. I'm always looking out for more.

Wonderful score.

I really like walnut. For all the reasons listed, as well as the fact that it's just really nice to look at under a finish. I think it's a really underappreciated tonewood for backs and sides - and plentiful, too. Lots of opportunities to salvage black walnut from downed trees, etc. in the east coast
