Post subject:  EIR tap tone

Just got some b/s sets from the Zootman and had a question. The wenge and padauk have great tap tones. Even the cherry. They ring and sustain. The EIR? Not so much. I also noticed it on the EIR I'm using on my current build. Both sets are nice, straight grained, and quartered, but they don't have that "bong" (technical term)when you tap them.

Is that the nature of EIR or do I just have a couple of sets that aren't that great?

Any thoughts are welcome.

Thanks

Steve

tapping isn't all it is cracked up to be . Some woods tap well and don't make good guitars , some woods sound like cardboard but will
go figure.
Martin never tap tones and still make good instruments .

Most of my Indian sets tap(ed) OK, a few very nice and glassy. One however was quite dull. After I joined and thinned it, it sounded better. Not worse than maple or mahogany. I am currently at the binding stage and I feel the guitar will be nice. The box in itself is "musical" enough.

I have never tapped padouk or wenge so I cannot compare to EIR. It sounds, however, like your stuff is fine. I mostly build with it and usually if I tap with my nail it has a "glassy" "brittle" sound but not a lot of sustain. EIR is pretty consistent across the board which is one of the reasons I use it. I am sure you are good to go.

Also, the thickness and stiffness affect the tap tone........may sound a lot better when thinned and/or joined.
