No really...I'm at the point where I'm about to carve the neck and I'm not sure how wide the nut should be. I'm building my version of an OM Any help is appreciated |

If you want to make an OM per Martin specs, follow Todd's info, but it's up to you or the player's preference. I have fat fingers and prefer 1-3/4" as compared to 1-11/16" spacing common on Dreds. I'm a newbie player & it's amazing how easy it is to feel 1/16" of difference. Kevin Looker |

I also use .235-ish for nut thickness and 1-3/4 width. |

I like 1-23/32" width at the nut and 3/16" nut thickness. |

freakin' huge... oops, did I say that... oooh those nuts.. 1/4" from stem to stern and what ever width the particular case calls for. 1-7/8" (neck width) wide for fingerstyle guitars and narrower for flat pickers. |

Nut thickness is 3/16". No real reason not to make it more or less. Nut width is player preference and is only one piece of the overall string spacing scheme, so it depends. There have been many threads about it over at acousticguitarforum.com, so go search over there for lots of perspectives. I have big hands, so my preference is 1 7/8" nut width, 2 1/4" bridge spacing. I can't really play 1 11/16" nut width. Fingertips are just too wide to fret individual strings at the first few frets without also muting at least one neighbor. 1 3/4" is ok, but still a little tight. |
