Hi All I'm using some b/w/b fiber purfling 0.040" thick on my latest build. Its going around the side, under the binding so it has to bend sideways. I've had trouble with this stuff breaking or puckering when I try to bend it into the waist area. I wish I didn't like the look so much.....maybe I would just skip it Anyone know a way to soften this stuff or get it to bend well?? |

Bend the purfling at the same time you bend the bindings. Sandwich the purfing in the middle of the binding strips and tape the all together (binding/purfling/purfling/binding), bending as one unit. |

Quine: I wonder if you are gluing to your binding before bending..?? I generally glue to binding,then tape two binding strips together with the purfling back to back with each other.Then bend them in the bender. This tends to give some support and helps prevent your problem.This way you can bend enough for two or three guitars at one time. Tom Aaron is too fast on the keyboard...!!!! Or I'm too slow...!! LIKELY THE LATTER. |

Others have already mentioned gluing before bending. Another trick if you pipe bend is to make a pair of thick aluminum or brass pieces that are bent in a curve to match your pipe. Then just use hose clamps to attach them to the pipe leaving a thin space between that is just the size of the purfling strip you want to bend. The thick pieces not only support the purfling on the sides but also help heat it there as well. This allow you to spritz and bend and the steam will let the outside radius slip and stretch without crimping the inside or getting waves in the purfling. You do need to do it in shorter stretches since it steams out quickly. Just re-spritz and bend again to get more curve. Alan D. |
