I love my Schneider Gramil. I think it's a dead clever way of doing a simple job and I enjoy using it. One problem. Oval soundholes for a mandolin or other small instruments can't be done because the radius of the gramil is too shallow. Instead of modifying the current body, I was wondering about making one from wood. Basically the properties I'd be looking for for such a project is something that is hard so I can tap it for the screw that holds the metal blade holder and then wear very slowly so I don't have to make a new body. Any materials other than wood would be fine too.

I'm sure you could make a new body from wood, but if I need a tighter radus on the gramil, I just cut an appropriately sized hardwood dowl in half and stick it to the flat side of the gramil with some doubble-sided tape. Works like a charm, and u can easily fit multiple tight curves.
