I'm trying to inspire my kids to play guitar, so I made them these. A lefty for my boy and righty for my girl. Both 24" scale. |

Hi Scott, great looking guitars! How old are your kids? I've a young daughter and I'm trying to decide where to start - baritone uke tuned dcge or 3/4 size guitar... |

Those are nice guitars. I am throwing the following out to the collective. Why is it assumed that lefties need to flip the guitar around? I can understand if they have already learnt to play that way, but if you are starting from nothing, you still have to teach each hand a new task. A friend of mine is a lefty but plays guitar in standard position. She says that its easier because her dominant hand gets to do all of the hard stuff like playing chords, etc. We see this in guitars, but I've yet to see a left handed piano, violin, trumpet, or any other musical instrument, why only guitars? |

Thanks for the kind words, As for the woods, Sitka top, Mahogany neck and sides, Padauk? backs. I'm not really sure. Aside form the top the rest came from an old barn. I started making them a long time ago and just finished now. As you may have guessed, they sound like a 2x4 with strings. Funny thing is, everyone who picks one up can't put it down. I started playing when I was 10 on a nylon string. My boy is 11, my girl is much older, 19. I would start a kid on a 3/4 or a small nylon before a uke, just my opinion. I did toil over the lefty thing. When I hand him a guitar he holds it lefty. He's able to strum far better with his left, he doesn't seem to have any timing with his right. I'll let him decide, he dose play the Baritone horn in the school band as a righty. |
