Post subject:  Old Style Binding and Veneer
Watched a great program on PBS called The Woodwright's Shop. They had an episode where a couple of instrument makers
were showing how to work veneer and trim on a tool box using old style techniques. Really cool seeing the special planes.

The host of the show, Roy Underhill, has written many books about early American carpentry and furniture making. His knowledge of tools and technique is vast. If you watch any of his shows, they are done in real time, so sometimes he doesn't get his project completed! Behind his folksy humour, he is an awesome craftsman and historian.

How could you not know of Roy? That's like not knowing about New Yankee Workshop either. You'll see alot of interesting things on his show. Steaming boards for chair backs and even larger things and I saw one that was on relief carving which was interesting to me .

Very cool! I jumped into the middle and after just a couple minutes of watching I've already learned a great new trick... brush hide glue onto both surfaces of a headplate when gluing, so it doesn't cup and try to pull up on the edges. I had a tough time getting the last one clamped down in place due to that.

I've been watching NYWS for years. Recently Norm has been making just about the same thing over and over. Where I live, PBS has just started playing Woodwright's shop regularly.

I've learned so much about the way woodworking used to be done that many of the techniques are better than today if you have the special planes. Roy had an episode on rabbeting and molding planes that was outstanding. He even explained about runout and the grain of the wood.

I really appreciate the veneering techniques...I always thought you had to buy veneer from Woodcraft! ....Be mak'in it your own self??? laughing6-hehe

If you are interested in learning more of the "old ways", Roy has a school with various programs and expert visiting faculty which has had excellent reviews from a few of my friends who have attended. Bring Bandaids. :lol:

Its really pretty easy, actually. Live in a different country, no cable TV, etc...

I've never seen either of the shows. While I've actually heard of the New Yankee Workshop, I never heard of the other one with that Roy fellow.

There are a lot of shows, people, etc, that most of you guys take for granted that everybody else knows what you're talking about. We're used to it, so we just nod politely-like those people who act like they get your jokes but have no idea what you're actually talking about.

You can use duct tape for your braces, can't you?? Maybe the fancy red kind?

Don't feel bad! I live in Southern California!! We have cable though! :D

I was just running through the other years of Underhill's site and in the 2007(?) season they actually had a violin maker showing his trade. Roy could of done a couple of shows considering how involved violin making can be.

There was also a show on cutting wooden threads and making cutters with annealed files that was quite interesting.

I like the show a lot because it causes one to think laterally when facing a problem in wood working.

Oh, we can GET cable, I just choose not to pay for it.

With cable, people in my family spend too much time looking for the best show to watch and end up watching nothing.

I watched the episode mentioned here, I really liked the veneer scraper! I need to make one of those. Simple and effective. The HHG applicator was a good idea, too.

I would find the Underhill show interesting but it would bore my family and I would never get to watch it. I found his old-time folksy manner getting in the way after awhile, mostly where he plays himself as not knowing nearly as much as he actually does.

Roy must be doing something right. He's had a show on continuously since 1979. As far as his on screen schtick...cut him some slack...he was a Theater major. :roll:
