Post subject:  I've Been Scavenging Again

I came across a tree that was down and asked the guy if I could have it. He said sure. There were only a few leaves coming up from the base. It came from a lot that had and old house that was long gone so it was a planted tree. Not native. The leaves you see are about 5 inches and waxy looking. The log underneath is a bay tree so ignore that. The dark could be spalting. It is very hard, has no particular smell and looks a bit like cocobolo. Wood is very fine with no pores. Not coco here in Northern CA I know. I would swear the leaves were that of tulip tree. Anyone have any ideas?

Sure looks like it to me. Isn't it in the same broad family with Poplar?

+1 for Magnolia, but our Magnolia leaves, locally, are much darker green, and the leaves have more of a point.

I have an old Magnolia board. I'd say it was similar to Poplar, like Waddy says, but "whiter."

Yes it could be a magnolia. That would be something someone would plant in the front yard. It would be pink if it was tuilip? I'm going to day no on Magnolia. Magnolia wood is described as cream colored. This heart wood is a very dark chocolate color.

Looks like a Sweet Bay Magnolia leaf. The leaves are smaller than the typical Grandaflora type we have down here on the Plantation  . Magnolia wood can be cream colored with sections almost Walnut colored like Poplar. A good way to tell is cut into it and if it smells like a Magnolia blossom it's Magnolia. It's pretty soft and turns like butter. Great for bowls and goblets. Here's the Hobbit House link:
