I didn't videotape the lacy session, but I did tape a couple of the other sessions. I will be editing in the next couple of weeks. Glenn |

I'm sure it'll show up soon, though I'm sure it'll take some time for them to do up the transcripts and put the video together. Chuck Erikson had written a paper, as well, which he was handing out at the conference. I haven't had the chance to read it yet, but I hope it'll be available online as Chuck's stuff has always been prime. |

There were lots of handouts available and some informative presentations from the 3 government officials and the one non-profit speaker (as one member here said, 3 government officials and one true believer!). The talk was very informative but not completely assuring. I feel a little better about what I "know" but I am still wary of gaps in what I don't know. The CITES guy was very well spoken and clear, the enforcement agent seemed nervous and made me more confused. The LACEY guy was a little strange but informative and was very willing to give out his information. I am sure all of this will be available as ASIA puts it out and it seems like that best way to get that information is to wait for the whole package. I am not trying to be withholding here but that is how it seems to me. The questions I was left with were: 1. What paperwork would I need to allow pearl to travel over international borders? (the issue here is that pearl is fish and wildlife as it is from an animal and falls under stricter paperwork requirements than anything under APHIS. Again, I could be wrong about that.) There were stories of 1 pearl dot causing confiscation. 2. I would like more clarity on the requirements for individuals hand-carrying their personal instruments across international borders. (This was covered a bit in the presentation but I was not clear on the details). What paperwork can I provide to make any part of that easier on my customer? There are others but those are the main 2. There was no total primer scenario put forth for exportation but alot of information about possible scenarios. The speakers maybe gave us a bit too much credit in some cases for understanding the current requirements and I think also assumed we were working on a larger scale. Some of the people in the room ceratinly were working on a larger scale but many of us were not. I do feel like in terms of CITES I have a good understanding of what is allowed and what is not. Most of my unclear areas involve the combinations of LACEY, APHIS, and Fish and wildlife and where they all overlap. I do think the information given at the talk was enough for me to decipher these things but I have not done so yet. Whenver ASIA is able to put this together it will be a great benefit to all of us and they are doing all of us a great service. I am very thankful they were able to pull all of it together. David and Chuck deserve all of our thanks as well. |
