I'd been thinking that another, preferably larger, bandsaw would be nice so I wouldn't have to change blades constantly and could move the 14" to the basement for lighter duty work. I didn't figure it would happen for some time since money's tight with a new addition on the way (I'm about three months from seeing my son . . . super excited about that; but I digress) and it's hard to convince a wife you really need a new bandsaw when you have one setting in the garage. But, when I ran across this little 20", 3 horse puppy on Craigslist for $500, I couldn't help myself. Runs great, but could use a new blade. I've got osage orange billets out the whazzo, but was having a tough time re-sawing them with my smaller Craftsman. Now, I think I see some bright yellow guitars in my future. Anyway, while my wife may not, I figure my friends here would appreciate the deal.

Sorry for the blurry pic.

Off topic, but I never would have imagined hedge (that's what most call "osage orange" round these parts) was great tonewood. We use it for fence posts or firewood (if your stove is heavy duty enough to handle its crazy hot burn rate). But man, the back slices I did manage to cut on my smaller bandsaw a few months ago ring like gongs. Now I just have to get past the color.

I generally find the same thing Chris, but every now and then you find a great deal. But then you still have to be the first guy in line to get it. I thought the price might have been a typo, but when I spoke to gent, he confirmed the price. He was just getting out of woodworking and didn't seem to worried about the price. Super nice fellow, too. Anyway, I got lucky. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in awhile. :)

If you feel like donating any of that osage to my "help Aaron start building guitars" fund I will gladly accept ;)

Nice score on the bandsaw! I need to figure out how to get the most out of mine, maybe I'll have to start a thread on it and see if anybody has any suggestions.

On getting past the color, Rockhard tabletop varnish has a nice amber hue that tones it down quite a bit. Time also helps as it will mellow out toward a nice medium brown kind of like brown ebony.

Very nice! I don't really have space for a bandsaw, don't like loud noise, or things that want to cut my fingers off, but it sure would be useful. Perhaps time to start excavating junk from the basement and creepin' on craigslist.

And if you have a wazoo of osage and need to pay off that saw, I'd be happy to buy a set or two off of ya :) And maybe some bridge plate material too.

As for the color... ain't that what stains and bursts are for?

Dennis, if this saw and I get along well, I might eventually get rid of some wood to help pay for the saw. I also have some nice black walnut billets I'm going to try and turn into guitar sets. The wood is pretty green now, and will need some time seasoning before I would consider using it for backs and sides. If and when I decide I have hoarded enough Osage for myself, I'll give you a shout. You're close enough you could just swing by and pick out a set for yourself! Although, there doesn't seem to be too much variance in the Osage . . . its all really yellow.

Craigs List? Man...... that stuff never happens to me.

As far as Osage goes, mine has mostly stayed this same color (See link below). This wood might be one of the only valuable additions to tonewood that we Kansans have to offer.

Best of luck with your new saw.

Hi I have 4 bandsaws and have used many types of blades except the laguna , and lenox.

Sorry I caused you to lose out on your fifth bandsaw. And to think, I had a difficult time explaining to my wife why I need 2 bandsaws. I should have just brought her by your place and had you explain why instead. laughing6-hehe

Well to tell the truth. My wife lets me indulge in my addictions to toolmania. I am currently enrolled in a 12 step program for recovering tool addicts. But somehow I don/t think I/ve been cured yet. Yes you can bring over your wife to my shop and I can give her a detailed analysis for your need for 2 bandsaws. Have fun

Osage Orange has almost identical acoustic properties to Brazilian rosewood. I have a set that I'm planning on using next. Al Carruth has built a few guitars with it and they have been outstanding. It just won't take a stain so you have to work around the color. Or, you could sell it to the people who make Orange Crush and tell them it is a tribute guitar;)

My wife knows that there are worse hobbies. Drinking, drugs, gambling, women, golf, etc.

Mike I concur with your wife/s idea. For proof all I need is to look around my subdivision, and feel redeemed
