I got these sides for bending practice from LMI. There was nothing on the sticker to identify what type of wood it is. I plan to use it on my current (first) build from scratch, and would like to know what it is.

It seems to have the following characteristics - somewhat splintery, but works well with a sharp scraper, emits a smell of well composted manure when scraped. Both sides have a bit of warping, but nothing too severe. Also looks to have open pore structure and will need to be filled. I am not sure how they bend, as that is scheduled for this weekend.

I went through the stock at my local Woodcraft store, but didn't find anything similar. So, any guesses? idunno

I would agree, Ovangkol. It looks awesome with finish too. Nice golden colors.

As soon as you said 'well composted manure', I instantly thought Ovangkol, ha ha.

A girl in class was working with Ovangkol and the first thing I said to her when she started scraping it was "Smells like ***"

oops_sign Well I feel stupid. Seems obvious now. I can't believe I missed that.

Well, thanks for the help! Now I know what to use for the back, if I can find it.

Supposedly makes some pretty good guitars....

I was recently on a tour of the Martin Guitar factory, and our guide made a point of letting us know we were very fortunate to not be there when a set of Ovangkol guitars were being worked - for precisely those reasons.
