Setting up my drill press to drill the hole for the jack seems really awkward and no assurance it will be dead straight. I was thinking of using the drill press to drill through a chunk of 2 x 4 and use that as a guide on the end of the guitar. Any advice you have on this will be appreciated.

This might look weird, but this is how I do it. (Actually, this is drilling for the neck bolt-on, but same setup for switchjack- using lipped 15/32" brad)

Dave, thanks. I ended up setting up the drill press and using a 15/32" pencil bit (brad tipped). It worked fine, but your setup looks easier. Rich

I use a 1/2 inch step drill bit. It leaves a super clean hole, is easy, and practically fool proof.

No drill press neccesary.
