Post subject: | quick supplier question |
So this morning I came across Oregon Wild Wood, I was wondering why the prices are so low. I am looking to buy a Claro walnut top to carve for an electric and I also need a Neck blank and most places I have looked the prices are at least double. Am I just used to seeing "Instrument grade" pricing? A rock maple neck blank is 40$ from LMII, a Highly figured neck blank from this supplier is 40$ I must be missing something please help. I know very little about buying lumber and this will be my first build. I planned on taking a 45 min trip to a local hardwood supplier, but at these prices I might not have to take that ride unless I'm overlooking something. Who knows maybe the local supplier will have cheaper prices for me seeing how I was looking for a plain Claro top rather than this highly figured Claro from Oregon Wild Wood. The maple necks are almost all Birdseye I believe the blanks that don't say flat saw are most likely Q saw. Also I've never seen some of these colors or figures in maple tops before on any of the other sites I have been on. Has anyone done business with OWW? Any advise? thanks, Mike Here is a link if you want to check them out. http://oregonwildwood.com/Merchant2/mer ... e_Code=oww |

Go for it. I've bought quite a bit of stuff from them, and all good quality. Especially cool that most of it is salvaged. They used to be a sponsor here. I think the necks are rift unless specified. I've always picked out the ones that specify quartered, and look like good straight grain in the photos. Some of their walnut necks before looked too curved to me, but it looks like they've all sold, so I guess someone else didn't think so ![]() I'd stick with the luthier suppliers for neck stock, until you can confidently judge what it suitable. Body wood for electrics, lumberyard stuff ought to be fine. But the OWW tops are quite beautiful and reasonably priced, so you might as well use 'em ![]() ![]() |

sounds good I think Ill take a ride this week and see what my local supplier has to offer I would still like a somewhat plain piece of Claro for the top but if I find nothing from the local place Ill just have to Order the crazy figured stuff from OWW, as for a neck i still cant make up my mind. |

Nice folks at OWW. I've bought myrtle from them twice now. Wood was what they said it was, price was very good, and they seemed genuinely concerned that I was satisfied. -Bob |

I've bought from them also, and was very satisfied with the wood I got. I drove by them on my last trip to Oregon, but it was before I realized they were a luthier supplier. It's a small operation right on the coast. Lots of raw wood, stumps, and slabs sitting in the yard. I'm definitely stopping when I go up this year. |
