Here's an idea that a student of mine and I came up with... thought it might be of interest to others. We're pretty pleased with the outcome. The shape is mirrored in the soundport cutouts, which have a flame / dove-like / flower-like quality. I don't have pics of the soundport yet, but will post those soon as well.

Enjoy!

That is a very pleasing addition to that instrument.
I approve!

Nice! But more importantly, can I steal it? :D

Ken - What a great design - I'm already thinking of variations, so it won't seem obvious that I stole it from you. Hope I can get by to see this one when it is finished.

Paul, yes, you should definitely try to come by in the next few weeks and check out these guitars (there are four students). We've come up with some very nice designs and combinations.

And Larry (and others), please feel free to come up with your own variations on this idea. Unless I'm really fooling myself, and forgetting something that I saw elsewhere at some point, I think that this fretboard extension cut-out is an original idea (is that possible?). Recently I saw some pics of a fretboard that went all the way across the soundhole area, with the soundhole cut through the fretboard; but adding this little flourish was a brainstorm / inspiration kind of thing as the student and I considered what to do with the fretboard extension.

If it turns out that this is in fact a first, maybe people could call it an Englewood (Guitars) cut-out (what I hope to call my guitars some day).

Anyway... yes, feel free to 'imitate' - I've heard that it's very flattering :)

Here's the sound-port on this little guitar. We were inspired by some of the three-part versions from builders here, but it was totally sketched by hand, with other images from nature that we were trying to evoke.

Here it is, still unbound, and un-finished.
