Definitely split, then saw. For those that don't, look at the thread on x brace caps. Chuck |

Hi Chris. 90% of what I get comes from split billets so there's almost no runout to begin with. I get one edge parallel to the grain lines and saw from there. |

All my stock comes from split billets. I straighten the edge if need be and saw from there. |

Chris: Looks like the consensus is YES. Split and saw, thats also how I do it. If you are wondering if sawn billits are the way to go for sale at LMI, I would really suggest that you not eliminate the split ones. Have tried sawn blanks from a couple of sources and now I will not buy because I find they are a waste both of time and wood. Just my experience ,others may suggest otherwise. Tom |

My brace wood from High Mountain Tonewood usually comes perfectly quartered, so no need to split. |

Another one here for split, then saw. So I guess the answer is, both! |

After my first experience cutting brace wood which was Sitka with runout, I split the billet down the middle then resaw each half from the split side.......then final touch up on the drum sander. |

Split and plane for me. But that's cause I don't use all them hungry power saws, and hand sawing a straight line is more tricky than whacking it with a chisel again. |

The sticks I bought from LMI I just sawed because they were square and quartered. Nice wood on LMI's part; but expensive. Now I get my bracing from another source, for ALOT less, but its more work to get it square. LMI should offer chunks of bracewood with no runout. It's light, it should'nt cost much to ship. As long as 1 side is flat, Most luthiers can work with it. I'm sure theres TONS of bracewood that sits in the forest floor and rots. There are luthiers around the world that are starving for wood for musical instruments that can't affor the good stuff. Chris, I work for the USPS, and I know you can ship dry chunks of spruce around for not as much as u think, cheaper than ups, and fedex. LMI has good wood. |

I use brace wood that is left over from high end violin makers billets, these were split first before the violin wedges were cut, so that the faces I have are ready to take straight to the band saw. But I guess that still counts as split, then saw! Colin |

If you split a rather large billet down the middle it is not a guarantee there won't be any runout an inch or two farther away. Most trees have a wavy inconsistent growth, to a certain extent. As a result I make all braces by splitting as close as possible to the final dimension then truing with a plane. It's more waste and work though. |

I just buy mine from Shane, and it's nearly perfectly quartered, and with minimal runout, so I can just saw it. |
