Most every guitar I have seen has the strings angled coming out of the nut toward the tuners. I'm aiming at a more contemporary look of the stings remaining in the same line from the pins to the tuners. Since this is fairly unusual I'm wondering the reason(s). Purely aesthetic reasons or is it thought to have an effect on tone?

The only effect on tone is the ease of tuning.

I have used this arrangement on ukuleles with a zero-fret. It makes the string-guide mostly an ornament but the direction to tighten the tuning machines can get complicated.

Someone on this board has a guitar with this arrangement on his identifier photo.
