Post subject:  Can I save my wood?
so today I bend my first peace of bubinga and right after I bend it I noticed that I had the wood to far forward so I quickly undid everything and moved the side back put more water on it then re-bent it. it worked but now the wood has a bunch of dimples in it.
I think I may of over heated it I don't know. I know the temp did hit over 400 and one point and thats why. I"m not sure.
but the question is can I safe the peace some how?
any help would be great!! thanks!

Micah what was your thickness when you bent it?

2.1 mm it was baking when it hit 400 I was bending it around 320. Well the re bend bc I wasnt keeping a close eye on the temp and it went up on me. I try and bend normally around 265. I normally don't let it bake that high. I have been letting it bake in the 300s until I stop seeing steam come out then I bring it down but that bc I rapping it in wet paper. This is only the 5 side I have bent so I'm still learning at up for any advice on what to do.

Micah...as unbelievable as it may sound...I think I have found the outside cut to the billet your sides were sawn from. I looked at the set you bought and while it's not a perfect match, it's so close I think you should try it. I can send you pics of it if you want.

I've used a clothes iron and an inside mold to remove "potato chip" texture. You may not have an inside mold now, but you might want to save the sides in case you get one in the future.

I've bent Bubinga on a hot pipe before, not sure about the bending jig with heat blankets.

What I don't like about the heat blanket setup is when doing the waist bend there isn't anything to support them, possibly leading to problems with rippling, since I have seen it on pre-bent sides from LMI (which uses this setup).

My suggestion is when using heat blankets is to first bend the waist using a heat pipe or bending iron, to form the initial V shape, then put it in the fox jig or whatever and bend normally.

When I bent bubinga on a pipe I had considerably less problem with rippling. The wood will ripple to some extent possibly due to its grain structure.

The rippling was from me being stupid and not keeping an eye on the temp and let it get over 400 deg. Do be honest the wood bent very easily probably easier then all the zebra I bent I just made a mistake.
