Post subject:  Is my PO Cedar leaking?

I was going thru the woodpile tonight (dreaming about what to build next..am I the only one who does this? ) and noticed by only set of PO Cedar looks like it has spots on it. I don't recall hearing anything specific about this cedar, so I'm open to suggestions if I caused this to happen or just a bad set?

It came from a reputable dealer about 2 years ago many of us are familiar with. It was stacked with the other tops, but not stickered at this time, but was stickered for the first year or so. It was kept in the garage with all the other wood, and I do my best to maintaikn the humidity around 45%.

Any thoughts?

Looks like roach poo to me.

Yeah, I was doing the same with my small stash of student tops. I saw the same on my POC top. I have used POC for some other things, and it is not like a pitch pocket in pine, so far it just seems like they go away with some sanding, I can only speak from limited experience, but I am not concerned with what I saw on mine.

Laurie that's just resin coming to the surface. Quite common with PO Cedar. It will sand off. Sand and seal with shellac when your ready to use it.

Bob - thanks - I don't have Shellac, but I can pick some up....any idea if Tru-Oil filler/Sealer will work? I have lots of that....

I know it was roaches....too cold here for 'em here!

I guess you should be pleased it is oozing it now, rather than later when the guitar is done and finished. I don't know if the resin can still flow to the surface after lacquering but if it does, you will get dark spots. I would just sand them off, and wait some more to see if more comes. From what several soundboard cutters told me, POcedar can be very resinous indeed.

Laurie I don't use Tru-Oil so I'm not sure. I do know that shellac works. Like Alex said it won't hurt to sand and wait to see if it returns. Even if it doesn't return I would still seal with shellac.

I have that on a few of my POC tops, incidentally the most recently cut. I'd wait a couple of years before using that top. It sands off, like on Spanish cedar.
