Can anybody help me find out some info on Phillipines Ebony (Kamagong). ..It looks like Macassar Ebony, and I am told it has similar physical properties...but can find no info.
Thanks in advance.

I've only seen crafts made from it while in Manila. It seems about like ebony....very hard and dense ebony. What do you plan to use it for?

There are three species that occur in the Philippines that are known as Kamagong:

Diospyros inclusa
Diospyros mindanaensis
Diospyros pyrrhocarpa

Of these, two are referred to as Philippine Ebony; Diospyros inclusa, and Diospyros mindanaensis. You're probably referring to Diospyros inclusa if you can compare it to Macassar Ebony.

All three of these species are more commonly referred to as "East Indian Ebony", a common name that covers quite a few different woods.

Hope this helps.

Rick

I have seen some wonderful looking guitars (from the Philipines..on Ebay) with Kamagong back/sides, and wanted to give it a go. Very beautiful wood .

The guy who sells the Kamagong guitars on Ebay sometimes sells Kamagong back and side sets. I remember seeing them sell for under $100 with around $45 shipping.
