I'm starting my first attempt at an armrest bevel and I'm wondering whether to laminate strips for the extra large lining under the bevel or to cut it from a solid piece of wood using a template (bandsaw close and router bit guide bearing for final shape). Thanks for any advice/experiences.

Chuck,
there is no "right way" to do it and I'm sure either way would work. Personally I use a solid piece a wood that I cut to shape.

Good luck,

Thanks, Peter. What wood do you use and do you cut and shape one continuous piece from the waist to the tail block? It seems that if it's one piece, it has to be cut from a pretty wide board.

You can glue up 2 pieces or make it from a single piece. Any wood would do but preferably an easy to work with that isn't too heavy...

I cut mine from one piece of maple too.
So far I've ruffed shaped the outter and inner on the belt sander.
I'm thinking that just shaping the inner side down on the sander and then doing the outside by hand with rasps and files etc. Almost like carving a neck. From what I've found by my limited experience it turns out the shaping of the bevel isn't the hard part but the binding of it is the tricky part to get right. That is if you are going to bind around it or just up to it or bind with a different type of wood. There are a few options out there as to how you want to treat that.
There is some info over at Luthierscommunity.org by Todd and others that might help you along. But sorry to say I haven't read or seen anything as of yet as to how Kevin Ryan does it.

Tony Karol's tutorial was very helpful for me on a 12 string I'm getting close to finishing. It's in the Fixtures, Videos and Picture Tutorials section. I used a solid piece of mahogany for the bevel section.
