This isn't meant to be any kind of criticism. I use and love the Stew Mac dremel router base. But look at this picture, I just got the new catalog and two things caught my eye, first: the bit in the router would not cut that fine, and: the actual cuts in the head stock are cut by a cnc machine, I THINK. Agree or not?

I think the end of the bit is the same size as the cut. I couldn't make such a good cut, but I think some guys could. A good magnifier also helps. |

Sorry guys, look at the pic on the back of the new catalog. The bit is too big. But I don't care about that detail. Look at the "saturn ring" it tapers from thin to wide in an even arc and regularity that is impossible with human hands! Look at the curl of the leaf and how it tapers back on itself... Only Dan McRostie can prove me wrong. |

I'm with you David. No way was that inlay made with a Dremel. Or if it was, the Dremel was attached to a CNC. But, that said, discovering that a publicity picture was 'staged' is not something that surprises me... Heck, even the guitars shown on my web site were not made by me! ... (Hope you all figured out this last line was a joke...) |

Nothing in the picture looks used or dirty, no dust in the picture, could be completely composed as you suggest, but there is no where near the necessary fuel in this offence for overheating one's follicles to the point of combustion. Rob |

StewMac is a great company that consistently provides innovation, quality products, and customer service that is unmatched by any company I've done business with. Given their history, this seems like a small thing to complain about. |

David, actually I do all the inlay work for those guys. I use chisels and a mallet. For finer detail, my Buck brand pocket knife comes in handy. Steve |

Woa! Where did anyone get the idea I was complaining about anything?  It is all luthier-weenie talk!  I love, and spend lots of money with Stew-mac, and can't wait to make my next order for stuff. I know advertising pictures are not "real life". Anyone ever do food photos? You cannot eat the food made for photos. Did you EVER buy a burger that looks like the advertising? Did you ever date a girl that looked like a model in a magazine? They don't exist in real life. Rob... the "hair on fire" is a quote from YOU in another thread, duly attributed. Steve, I've seen your inlays. Your chisel work does have a certain "charm". |

Making cuts like this by hand is simple as long as you're either a master who has been doing it for decades, or barring that, as long as you remember to drink enough whiskey to steady your hands well before you begin.  Rick |

I wouldn't judge StewMac by that picture because I can't really see what's going on. But don't be surprised if your suspicions are confirmed. Having worked closely with advertising agencies in a former life all I can say is that my exposure convinced me that the entire industry is pretty much one big moral lapse. |

I saw a demo by Judy Threet on cutting and inlaying pearl. She could do something like that with her eyes closed. Some serious skill there, at least compared to anything I've seen in the flesh. |

Like all advertising there's a target audience with a known demographic. So who is StewMac targeting with this particular advertisement? It's hard to imagine a pro or seasoned amateur finding this sort of thing appealing. So assuming StewMac understands its base, who exactly is StewMac trying to entice? Perhaps they should stick to fundamentals and resist the enchantments of advertising gurus - KISS. |
