I used Weld-On to glue tortoice binding to a fingerboard. Dispite my efforts, the binding did not get seated exactly right on the end. ![]() Steve |

I've never used weld on, but if I'm understanding correctly the binding on the end of the fingerboard is the problem (??) If it is just a small piece on the end I'd either try to remove it with a sharp knife, or sand it off. Celluloid binding will burn easily (it's actually flammable) so I don't think heat is a good idea. |

Well out of my zone of expertise, but as long as any applied heat does not reach ignition temperature, you would probably be O.K. If you have a small piece of scrap, simply do a prolonged test with a heat gun, to determine a safe temperature threshold for the real operation. But removing it -as mentioned by woodyB- might still be a better idea. |

Do not use a heat gun with celluloid in order to melt the glue. Celluloid ignites suddenly and you'll ruin your piece, there's no warning. Woody's advice is best: remove the piece with a sharp chisel and/or knife. Alternatively, you can melt celluloid on celluloid with acetone if it's a gap to fill. |

Those are some good ideas. It looks like I should either cut the end piece off with a sharpe chisel or use a paste w/ acetone and binding shavings to patch the gap. Thanks for the heads-up on heating the celluloid. I knew it was flamable but I didn't think that trying to losen the glue with heat could be a problem.... Sometimes you just need someone to bounce ideas off of and that's why I like this forum... Steve |
