Post subject:  End Graft To Disguise Grain Mis-Match
This post is to show my results in doing an end graft to try and disguise mis-matched side wood grain where the sides meet at the bottom. It may be of interest to those who find themselves in a similar situation.

This is a follow-up to the earlier thread I started on how to do a particular end graft: http://www.luthiersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=30754

This is the situation I started with by not paying attention:

Yuk.

So I tried to figure out how I might camouflage this with an end graft. I saw that if I took an off cut from one the sides and flipped it inside out (relative to the sides) I could have something that would sort of join of the grain. Here's a photo of just trying out the off cut:

Since this looked like it had potential, I looked around for an idea to steal and that's when I decided to copy this end graft (which was the topic of the earlier thread). I wonder if the originator of this end graft was solving the same problem. Looking at the grain, it seems possible:

To make the end graft, I followed the process I outlined in my last post on the previous thread and here is the result:

Not perfect, but in my opinion, acceptable as a "save".

Me too.

This is maybe why some bend there sides at the same time to get better orientation at the heal block. But your fix looks great and shows that mistakes can be fixed if enough thought goes into the building process. Well done Pat. [:Y:]

I was wondering what wood as well.
I like the way the binding is the same color as the side,
with the wbw between.

Its only a mistake if you cant hide it. If you can, its a "feature." This is definitely a feature! [clap]

As for the back and side wood, let's try the guessing game for a bit. The bindings are indeed bubinga but the back and sides are not. It's not one of the really traditional guitar woods but it was bought from one of our sponsers. To further help you out, here is a picture of the back:

Wow, that didn't take long. It is indeed hormigo. Well done Chris.

This is the first time I've used hormigo and I have to say it rings like nothing I've used before. I'm anxious to hear what the guitar will sound like.

Extremely creative solution to the "problem". I agree with the comments
that it looks like it was planned that way, it came out so well. This fix
