Hi. I'm thinking of purchasing a couple of these. http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?cat=1,41504&p=46403 What is the difference(if any) between these and standard bevel edge chisels? Are there any reasons why they would not work for luthiery? Thanks in advance for your replies. |

Thanks, Fred. I've been looking at them for 6 months or so now. I have a set of Stanley chisels. They're cheap, but they work well. I also have an old wooden handled chisel of indeterminate make that was given to me that I like pretty well. I'd like to have a couple of well made wooden handled chisels, and these are in my price range. I guess I'm gonna have to get a couple. |

Mike: Those are good chisles. Also look at the Narex ones,think they are better bang for your buck if your hurting for cash. Tom |

Thanks, Todd. I had read on another thread on this forum that they were basically the same as the Two Cherries. The only differences I can find are the labels, and these say they are hardened to Rockwell c61, whereas the Two Cherries say they are hardened to Rockwell c62. Sounds like a pretty fine distinction to me, lol. But what exactly does Firmer chisel mean. Beefier, thicker, fatter? Why the designation, and more importantly, what is a Firmer chisel? |

all I know is that firmer chisels don't have that bevel edge. Can't imagine cranking out dovetails with them. But then again what do I know? |

Tony, those are absolutely beautiful chisels! Being as old as they are, they look almost pristine. Did you do any restoration on them, or find them in that condition? |
