Post subject:  Links and Viruses

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up,, Thursday I got my second virus, both from a link on this forum. The most recent was the subject "Stereo Guitar". Computers are not a strong suit for me, so it may be just my ignorance, but I do have "virus protection". I am interested for advice on how to avoid this, since all I did was to click on the link and BANG, got the virus.... Be Careful!

I use Avast. The price is right (free). It slows things down but stays up to date and snags potential problems.

Mark, I have the free Avast also, did not protect me either time. I am thinking that the "free" version may not be sufficient.

after a virus completely screwed up a computer I used to have, and made a complete mess of things I realized that good virus protection is not free, I have had a subscription to Norton for the last couple of years and it has prevented several attacks ..

I've used Avast for a number of years. Works as well as any Norton or other virus scanner I've used.

I am not endorsing Norton...there are many good virus protection software available , I just think it is important to have constantly updated software, which a subscription does daily....I found out the hard way free software doesnt give you that peace of mind or protection,
just my 2 cents worth

I also keep a separate backup hard drive attached to my computer....

Google "Norton vs Avast" and "McAfee vs Avast". I think there is plenty of evidence that paying for Norton or McAfee doesn't equal better protection. It definitely doesn't equal better PC performance.
Setup Avast correctly (mine updates about every 30 minutes to an hour BTW), use healthy skepticism on what you click on (look at the little address window at the bottom of your screen before you click) and it will do its job as well as anything. Nothing is perfect.

I use Bit Defender on the PC, and My Mac takes care of itself.

Microsoft has a new, Free antivirus program that is getting very good reviews
on the rating websites. Microsoft Security Essentials.

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

I know a lot of people don't like Microsoft, but this seems like a good deal. I've
been using it on two laptops for about six months, and haven't had anything bad
turn up- of course I'm very careful about clicking on links.

On my main PC, I'm still using Norton while I try out the Microsoft product.

As soon as the Macs gain anywhere near the market share of windows based machines, the threat will shift. Very few hackers with Macs yet as well.

I just tried to go to the "Stereo Guitar" video on Gizmag and the free AVG blocked it and said there were threats detected...........

So, free stuff can work well. eek

10% of the market is Mac. $1,000 and over computers, 90% of the market is Mac. Yeah ... this "market share" rationale has been pushed for a decade. So how much market share needs to exist before the first Mac virus shows up?

Filippo

A lot! An awful lot more, I hope

At any rate, people with $1000+ computers (even PC's) are probably taking better care of them - the $500 computers are the easier targets, I'd guess.
