I would like a tip or two on the best way to pull these bushings out.

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,

Don't pull them out. Push them out from the back. If they are quite tight you can use a piece of dowel to knock them out. Just make sure that the headstock and neck are supported from the front side, insert the dowel into the tuner hole at the rear and give a sharp (not heavy) hammer blow to the dowel to loosen the bushing, I use something like a fretting hammer. This will usually knock them out or at least get them loose so you can push them out. If this doesn't work, you may have to heat them with a soldering iron a bit before you try it, but be careful not to burn the finish, etc.

Good Luck

Stew Mac has a thing for doing just that. Kind of expensive as all their stuff is, but worth it if you do it a lot.

The main thing you need to avoid is tear-out when they come loose. Pushing them from the back is a good idea, but you need to have firm support all around the bushing on the front to avoid tear-out. You can drill holes in a sacrificial board that correspond to the bushing size and locations on the headstock to accomplish the necessary support.

I use a little 1/4" drive socket with a bit of masking tape on the edge to back up the top (front) while I push them out from the back side.
Good luck!
