Someone told me I should use Dihydrogen Monoxide to raise the grain in wood prior to finishing. Anyone ever tried it, it sounds dangerous.

I use it all the time. In fact, my wife tells me you can drink it but adds, why would you want to?

I use it all the time too, but I heat it to 212 degF, add some camellia sinnensis, allow it infuse for a few minutes, then drink it. Sometimes I keep the leftovers - when it's cold, you can use it to stain your wood as well as raise the grain!

Has some side effects though....drinking too much of it causes frequent trips to the rest room.

Not to mention what the fish have been doing in it!

I use it all the time. It's really the only "must have" luthier supply.

I only use it in lutherie when it's been distilled to 100% purity.

I've got a little too much of the stuff, in its solid form, sitting outside on the ground.

I use it along with soap to cleanse my hands before a meal. It does work great for raising the grain though. In fact, I think I'm gonna go drink some........straight! :D

A rather pleasurable method of consumption indeed. Especially when some orange and black pekoe stain is added.

You do realize, of course, that every single person in history who has sipped this deadly liquid has later perished.

Actually, I can think of two in recorded history that didn't. But we can't talk about that in this forum. ;)

Adding it to hot hide glue may cause necks to bow when used to glue on the fretboard.

I prefer to dilute it with Chivas or Cuervo (1800 works best).
After consuption, you may noy care about raising the grain.

Well, I get really get if that thread is serious or not, but, seriously...

A teacher of mine who build violon and cellos once told me that between each grit of sandpaper, he slightly wet the surface with a humid sponge (humid, not wet). Wat.. I mean Dihydrogen monoxide leaves a ''hairy'' surface. Doing this between grits makes a smoother surface.
