Post subject:  Crack In Newly Recieved Sides!

I just received a set of Madagascar Rosewood from Allied and I noticed that the one side had a 2-2.25" thin crack in it. The book matched side is fine in the same location. Do I Call Allied to send it back or do I attempt to fix it? I assume that I could flood the crack with a little CA to prevent it from cracking any further and this will hold up under bending? The side is about 34" long and it is for a future dread build. From my estimation, if I stabilize the crack, the crack should be in the waste material if I bend carefully. Am I over estimating this? Anysuggestions or recommendations Please!

Call them. If I know them, they'll make good on it.

If this is a crack on the end, I wouldn't worry about it. It will be supported by the neck block or tail block. I would go ahead and stabilize it with CA, but don't expect it to hold during bending. A 14-fret dread requires sides about 31" long, but you can fudge a little, with the allowance for the neck and an end piece inlay.
OTOH, if you are not comfortable with these prospects, you could call Todd and ask for a replacement set of sides.

I had the same thing from them. I just CA'd it and I had no problem building with it. So if you like how it looks I'd use it. .02.

I like the set and figure that it would at the neck block and supported there. If I position it accurately during bending the crack might actually be trimmed off. I just want reassurance that it should not be an issue down the road when I can't return it and I could have taken care of it now. Just curious, since the crack is at the end of the board, wouldn't it see very little stress during bending since the end would remain relatively straight?

Yeah, it'll be nearly flat in that area. Though if it were me, if it didn't blow the visuals I would aim to put it at the butt...

I had a crack in a side from stew-mac, 10 inches long, splintered out. I emailed them and they sent me a new set free. :D

I've received broken wood from Allied before. The wood was broken during shipping but they still made it right, with no fuss, and immediately. Nice folks.

I looked at the crack again and I am not comfortable with it. I will give Allied a call today.
Thanks,
Scott
