I am looking at buying a spray gun. So here are some of my Qs: What size nozzle do you use? (i.e. 1.6mm, etc) How much finish does it take to spray a coat on a guitar body? This will determine what size gun I get. |

I have a Sata mini jet 4 with the 1.0mm tip, and the 4 oz can (I think, its the larger of the two available) .. it will spray 2 guitars and necks per fill |

Really need more info on the type of gun and finish you intend to use. Recomemded tip size can vary according to whether the gun is gravity fed or siphon fed and the thickness of your finish. Siphon guns generally require a larger tip than gravity guns using the same finish. Thicker finish also means using a thicker tip. Most waterbased lacquers seem to recomend a tip size from 1.2-1.5 in HVLP gravity guns. I don't have any experience with nitro or other solvent based finishes, but many here can help you in that area. I am a newbie at this, and have been having finish problems of my own lately. But, as with most mishaps, my troubles have caused me to learn more about the spray process. |

I plan on using a gravity fed gun to shoot em6000 waterbased lacquer. I will be using a compressor and not a turbine driven HVLP. |

I'm shooting Stewmac's Colortone, which I here is repackaged em6000. Jeff Jewitt of homestead finishing recomended their Qualspray 125W gun to me as a cheaper option to spray waterbased lacquer. I got the package that came with a 0.8 tip for spaying dyes and fine work and 1.2 and 1.5 tips for finish. The gun requires little air. My 6 gal 2 horse compressor can keep up with it fine. The gun seems to be very nice and sprays very well, my troubles with the actual finish notwithstanding. Give Jeff a call. They have all kinds of guns at various price points, and Jeff is very knowledgable and a straight shooter. |
