Where is a good place to get flake form 100% de-waxed shellac suitable as a sealer for underneath KTM- SV? thanks |

Wood Essence has flakes if you are interested in making your own mixture.They have good product and good to deal with. Tom |

LMII has it too. Or you can use Zinssers Seal Coat or Spray Shellac. Those two are de-waxed. |

I have a pound of dewaxed superblonde on the way. I tried the Zinsser stuff and had adhesion issues. I was able to peel off the bridge area like a decal, which was very convenient but nit very reassuring. This was with both the aerosol, and the premixed stuff through a Preval. I'm hoping fresh mixed stuff saves the day. As an add-on question, can isopropyl rubbing alcohol be used as a mixer? Thanks |

I've heard of people using it, but not very effectively. Too much water. If you were having adhesion problems with Zinsser, there was something else going on. That's what I use when I'm working my tops, and it sticks like crazy, and I tape to it, with no issues, or peel up problems. |

The issue was not making the shellac stick to the wood, which it did, but making the SV stick to the shellac. |

The regular Zinsser shellac is not de-waxed. Only the Seal Coat and the Spray. |

Well, now I know that KTM-SV doesn't stick well to the Zinsser stuff! For myself, I'm using polyurethane. Like I said, I only had issues with Zinsser Shellac, but the Seal Coat worked well for me. |

Frankly I would not base your decisions on my very limited experience with spraying. I am following a recipe that others have used successfully for a long time, so now I am just trying to reduce variables. I cannot attest for the shelf life of the shellac I used, either the premixed sealcoat or the spray can. So don't throw out the baby and the bathwater based on my singular result. I am really hoping to find how to make SV work for me as I think it's great stuff. It's just now a matter of finding out what is causing my particular set of kerfuflicities. |

it may be in your prep. if you sand much beyond 220 grit you can get the wood too smooth for things to stick . |

The problem is not getting shellac to stick to wood, but to get the SV to stick to the shellac... Wood was prepped to 220, shellac scuffed with a...a...a...scuffy pad. |
