Post subject:  Honduran Mahogany Confusion

Hello all could someone tell me why some suppliers won't ship honduran mahogany from the USA to the UK and others will for instance LMI won't Northridge Hardwoods will. Thanks Roby

That means you're not getting Honduram Mahogany, you're getting some other mahogany. If you order "Mhogany", it could be anything that has "mahogany" in any of it's common names, such as "Philipine
ahogany", which is simply a wood that grows throughout asia that has a grain similar to mahogany and when stained looks like mahogany.
Quite a bit of plywood is made from it. It's the reason sommany cheap guitars are supposedly made from Mahogany when they're not.
If you want Honduras it has to say either "Honduras Mahogany" or "Genuine Mahogany", otherwise it's not.

Due to CITES restrictions you shouldn't be able to get honduran mahogany from US. But if you're from UK, you should be able to get some from shops within EU:

http://www.madinter.com (it's harvested in guatemala, but it's the same thing - swietenia macrophylla)

http://www.guitartonewoods4luthiers.co.uk (scroll down for some neck blanks)

http://www.maderasbarber.com (you have to register to see what they have in stock)
