I used spruce for the back bracing on my first and it's not melting down or anything... just wondering why the consensus is for cedar or mahogany for the back braces. |

I don't think it really matters. |

I use mainly use spruce, also, and am happy with it for now. For an overview of CG making (not focusing on this topic), see Americal Lutherie #56: Shaping the Sound, by Jeffrey Elliott. Elliott and Tony Johnson (UK) have made the finest guitars I've heard and played, respectively. |

Because it looks nicer than stark white spruce against the rosewood (or cypress) back in my opinion, and as Doug says Cedrela just smells so nice. Colin |

I'm my current build, my first classical, I put spanish cedar for back braces. Why? Good strenght / weight, but especially for the look. Darken Redwood on dark rosewood, mahog neck, rosewood headplate, rosette... Could you imagine the oddness of a big white bar right through the soundhole? And by the way, for the same reason, I use rosewood (scraps from the back) for back stripe. |

I use both equally. I actually like the contrast between some hardwoods and spruce bars and linings. |

You aren't the only one. Johnnie, my clip player, always smells the inside before he starts playing a new one! |

I'd be careful though........... I well recall a guitar that was for sale a decade or so ago. A fellow's wife who was obviously displeased with him had urinated into the sound hole. There is only one transgression I can think of which would merit that level of retribution...............the guitar went unsold as far as I know. |
