Everything I have seen and used in the past has been spruce but I bought a few sets of pre-cut bracewood a few years ago (and just opened them - yeah, I don't build much!). The sets included an 1/8 x 1 x 18" piece of flatsawn maple for the back joint reinforcement. I could understand if it had the same grain orientation as a spruce strip, but I don't see the benefit of a flatsawn piece. Ever seen this or used it yourself? |

i usally use the cutoff from mt back and make a strip from it so the material is the same as the back . Just my personal choice and have nnever had any problem with flat sawn "yet" ![]() |

The strips, if quartersawn, need to be perpendicular to the grain of the back to work well (lest the split with it during a bump). A flatsawn strip avoids that problem, and given its use and size there's no reason to prefer QS except for looks. |
