| Post subject: | Suggestions on Keyless Precision Drill Chuck? |
My local woodcraft has a chinese made Harvest brand that is said to be 'precision' but no specs are given. The next question is.....is it necessary? My drill press seems pretty straight but I'd like the extra insurance. Chris |

No its really not that critical , the simple fact is , if your spindle isnt straight your chuck WILL NOT be any better . |

I don't need a keyless chuck but I sure would like one. If you're not experiencing any problems with your current setup, there's probably not a problem. You can always check it with a dial indicator. If there is significant runout in the shaft, it will defeat having a precision chuck. If you really want a sweet chuck, look for a used Albrecht. Kevin Looker |

Kevin Looker Absolutly correct , excellent chucks . I also sell PORTA brand , made in europe . They are a good quality chuck at a "reasonable" price. The main thing to be carefull of is , if/when it breaks , can u get parts or is it throw away ? I deal with this alot in my Industrial supply business , constantly have people come in with chineese stuff they bought at harbor freight and elsewhere and ask ... Can you get me parts for this, I ask , cant harbor freight get you the parts ? they say NO , and I say ....... welcome to buying cheap ! "ALWAYS" check and see if they can get you replacment parts Before Buying !! |

Filippo, does it handle 1/16" or smaller bits? Not that these are used too often on the press, but my Golden Goose will go down to a 1/32". I haven't tried smaller as the hand drill works quite well for that. I've often thought of a keyless for convenience, although a key sitting on a magnet near the chuck makes it pretty convenient. Somebody has to be the devil's advocate so just as well be me. I have two keyless chucks but don't use either. One reason is that they won't hold a tap when reversing the spindle. True, that's not an issue on most drill presses but is on a mill or lathe. The other reason is they're slow to adjust if the size difference is large between tool shanks. Seems like I can spin the outside of the keyed chuck for quick adjustment but not able to do that on the keyless ones. Perhaps mine are just not broke in enough to be loosened up yet? Nelson |
