I was carving a neck today, and decided to give my Lee Valley low angle spokeshave a try. I had used a regular Stanley-style shave (also Lee Valley) in the past and had commented here that in the end, I preferred to do everything with a rasp. I don't know why, but I had never pulled out the low-angle shave for this. WHAT AN OVERSIGHT! I've had my dose of new tool love for the day now. This one won't get far from the workbench ever again. I have one the LN spokeshaves too. I hadn't tried to use it on a neck before but decided to use it on a figured maple neck a few weeks ago. Quite pleasurable but had to go easy as the maple has a tendency to chip out; did the final shaping with rasps and files. Looking forward to a couple of mahogany necks I have coming up. It's a nicer tool than I thought. |

I have that same shave Jim and it's a great tool. I like the low angle kit that Lee Valley sells even better. I made this one from some Lignum that they had on sale a couple of years back. The hardware and blade are excellent and the feel of the wood is much nicer than the metal handled ones. Attachment: IMG_1218 carve neck.jpg

Quite pleasurable to do outdoors (well ... right now it is 20 degrees ... ) Filippo Do you do this with bare feet? ![]() |

I have that spokeshave kit too, Darren, and it never made it to the top of the to-do list for whatever reason. That may change very quickly now! Fillipo, that's how I'd do it too, but the weather is a limiting factor. I usually do most shaping and final sanding while sitting on the back deck, but the weather can get in the way. |
