Scene:

Nicolo Bussotti carefully inspects the poorly made violin of his apprentice who stands nearby...

...with a chainsaw in his hand.

Nicolo smiles approvingly and softly sets down the violin.

Yo, Zlugh

Just think of this as manually operated CNC.

I have been using the "Lancelot" carver chainsaw for the same purpose.
I can carve a plate in about an hour.

+1 on the Lancelot chain saw grinder thing. Kind of a scary tool, but I got used to it pretty quickly, I have only done 2 carved backs, but both took about an hour to rough carve. If you use this tool, read the instructions carefully.

Regarding the Lancelot carve,

Dudes me thinks you missed the point of this post ....non the less role this up and take a drag....

right angel drill ..................$250.
Lancelot carver....................$30.
Shipping, Handling & taxes....$50.
---------------------------------------
Thats a total of....................$350. plus electricity, sawdust every were and a screaming banchi in your ears.

One Pfeil Scorp*..................$30

Hogs out a plates belly leaving nice clean cuts in less than an hour. No expensive fancy shmancy little finger planes needed.

Safe, dead simple, no brain drain, easy to use in peace and quite while in communion with the wood.

Ya me know it's hard to purged the macho "TOOL TIME" approach, but
think about it.

Blessings

I wonder how Stradavarius would do it if he were alive today.

Historically we know that all the basic hand tools of today...like gouge chisels and finger plans and scorps existed long before his time. But the Cult of the Black Snake with all its plug in toys that can really bite you weren't on the scene yet so you could safely bet he didn't use no Lancelot carver back then. However, he was a manufacture of musical instruments, just like Benedetto or Martin or Gibson and as such would probably have moved his operation over to China by now.

Seems like a good way to carve. I'd be really impressed if he did the head scroll with the chainsaw too Eat Drink

Good point. He probably would use CNC, at least for the rough carving.

Sharpening stones come in a full range of mediums and grits and shapes from round to oval to cam shaped.

Or water papers wrapped around a hard wood dowel also works.

Than honeing compounds on small buffing wheels in a drill press or in a dremel or on leather wrapped around dowel.

Depending on the type of blade shape determines which of the above me use.

Best to keep the scorp well honed at all times cuz its not the easiest to have to sharpen if allowed to get dull as is with most curved blades.
