I'm playing around with Timbermate pore filler this week, picking up a tub and some TransTint from Woodcraft. Noticing the previous discussions about the lack of pigment in the product, I set about trying to make some filler for a sapele guitar that's going into the booth this week. For consistency purposes, I measured everything in grams on the triple beam balance. I was shooting for a dark brown mahogany pore fill that would retain its color under finish. Now my formula isn't as red, or as light as the McFaddens "mahogany" that LMI used to sell, but it's still fine for mahogany, sapele and koa -- and it looked fine under a coat of sealer on a test board. I don't have photos to upload right now, but here's the proportions. I suspect these could be taken as a starting point for getting enough pigment into the stuff. 100g Timbermate 25g warm water 5ml Brown Mahogany TransTint 5ml Dark Vintage Maple I suspect around 10ml of TransTint to 100g of Timbermate will give enough color saturation -- depending upon color your milage will vary. I didn't have the other colors to play with because Woodcraft didn't have them, but this is a place to start. |

Which color Timbermate did you start with? Thanks for taking the time to keep track of measurements and post that, I've got some Timbermate I haven't tried yet. |

How are you handling keeping the tinted timbermate filler out of the pores in lighter colored binding? Thanks, Paul |

Just posted some info about tinting Timbermate in the other thread about Timbermate. BTW, Jeff Jewitt expressly advised me against using Trans-Tint as a pigment. |

As I posted elsewhere, 5 months out no problem -- vinyl sealer, fill, level, reseal, topcoat. |
