Here is a link to a sound file I recorded last night on my latest Blackwood, Weissenborn, Style 1 copy guitar build!
The mp3 is my version of the old tune, Paris Texas released by Ry Cooder some years ago. I have used fingers only in this tune. The recording is live, no effects using a Zoom MRS4 recorder, a dbx pre-amp and a NT3 Rode microphone.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Thank you so much to you all for your kind remarks. I am very happy with the outcome. It was my first serious go at french polish and although it is a very labour intensive process, the result is a beautiful luster. A real vintage vibe I think.

I have french polished most all of the guitars I've made so far (only 6...) and was planning on doing it on the pair of Weissenborn style instruments I making right now. How much wear do these type of instruments see? I'm a little worried about durability and to make things worse they are Cedar topped... I like the FP process and prefer not having to figure out how to spray toxic materials in or near my home.

Again well done and thanks for sharing. On to the next project I suspect?

I have a five year old weissenborn style 2 guitar that has a cedar top with black plastic binding and New Guinea Rosewood back and sides. The rosewood is very hard and the plastic binding protects the edge nicely but the top is soft even with a lacquer finish. That's a disadvantage of using cedar. The guitar top however, has not dinged up too much but it doesn't leave the house.

The blackwood used on my last weissenborn copy build is very hard so the shellac works a treat as a finish.

At the present I am ready to do a shellac process on a my seventh acoustic, a parlor size, fingerstyle guitar using the Scott Antes plan. I have changed it a little and used a parabolic style bracing so we will see how it turns out.

Next project is a blackwood back and side, cedar or maybe spruce archtop using the Benedetto plan, book and dvds.

Gosh Alan! That sounds marvellous! So I guess the christmas tree bridge plate fulfills your expectations? Congratulations for your addition to the sliding community!

I can't wait to get mine finished but I'm currently abroad for work... Should get the finish done in February...
