Let's get a group buy going with these folks. I humbly & sacrificially volunteer to go and pick out wood. All I ask is meager travel and meal expenses. |

I did that a couple years back. It's fun going off and sorting through MASSIVE STACKS of spruce. It's definitely a learning experience. Unfortunately, I still have about 40 tops to use, so I don't really have a good excuse to go shopping for more. Must get a-building! |

I recently bought some Italian Spruce from http://cremonaresonantwoods.com, and it was nice stuff. I don't think they have 3A & 4A, but the prices, IMO, were pretty good for the 1st and 2nd quality, relative to some other suppliers. |

I used to buy from: http://www.ciresafiemme.it/prezzi_liuteria-e.htm Which is the place "cremona resonant tonewoods" get's their wood. Direct from the Co. you can buy their best quality for 41 euro (which is about $56 as of today) CRT charges $91 for the same top. Shipping was very reasonable direct from them as well. It's good wood, albeit cut a bit thin so you gotta watch it. Last time I wanted to order from them though they forwarded my e-mail "CRT" without telling me. I ended up just using Rivolta instead for vastly cheaper than CRT and the quality was excellent. So my recommendation is Rivolta. Shipping isn't that much. Wait is not too long and wood is most excellent. |

When I went to order last time they directed me to the Cremona Resonant woods. I talked with the owner there a bit and I got the impression he is the distributor for the US for them now and they would not sell direct. Unfortunate because of the vast price difference. The wood was good, the price not so much (not a bad price at CRT, but comparatively for the same wood from the same place kinda turned me off). So I took my business elsewhere. With you not being in the US you may have better luck. |

I've made instruments with tops from Rivolta that have turned out quite well, too. Some of them have a bit more run-out than I would have liked, but they are otherwise very consistent. |

I agree with Arnt that the Rivolta tops are nice with some runnout on some sets, which makes for a two-tone top under the finish. Only buy the E grade. |

Post subject: | Re: Looking for Italian Spruce |
the e-grade is the 55 euro / set, right? with added VAT, it becomes a bit expensive. but, still, also one to consider. i think i´ll check John Mayes tip first, though. the price seems right, and the wood comes from the val di fiemme (not that it guarantees anything, but still, it can´t be bad either) cheers! Miguel. |
