How do you hold a classical guitar (with neck attached) vertically to work on an endgraft. Anyone have any interesting jigs or vises. Thanks, Wendy

I use cam clamps to hold the guitar against a workbench or setup table with the headstock protected and resting on the floor.

The guitar troji would be nice with some modification to allow for the neck, but I don't have the room for it. Joe, does it not harm the radius in your top to clamp against the bench side, or do you have something between the bench and the guitar top? Wendy

Wendy, no, not if you set the inside half of the clamp to hold the guitar away from the edge. And yes, I also usually place a towel or carpet pad in between the bench and guitar as a precaution.

Of course, makes perfect sense, I don't know why I didn't think of that. And Filippo, thanks for the picture of a troji that doesn't require floor space.

One I made in a couple hours. Nothing fancy, but works very well.

That's the rating, and this is a family-friendly site. ;)

Here it is.

John's is a bit fancier than what I use, which is based on the same idea as his. Mine, and that of a good number of others here, I suspect, uses pipe clamps l like his, but only with carpeted plywood squeezers.

Kathy Matsushita has some very good photos on her web page, at the address above. I copied the way she attached the pipe clamps to her bench and it worked out well.

This is great timing. I built this Troji back in October of 2008 and finally have a guitar body to put in it. Any way it works great and looks cool too. This was made using Rod True’s plans. Thanks Rod.

Thanks for all the pics, I made the vice with pipe clamps like Kathy Matsushita's a while back, but my bench is not high enough for the neck to clear the floor. I still like seeing everyone's different methods for holding guitars in different positions.

very useful for getting the neck dead straight for fret dressing without having to adjust the trussrod.

not much use for fitting an end graft, admittedly ...

Filippo

That bench mount troji is pretty slick. [:Y:] I think I will have to borrow that design.

This is what I use too. With flexible ply for the jaws it works great and you can put pipe flanges on different benches and move it around if needed.

I just finished a Troji from the download plans, thanks go to Rod True. With the center of the shelf cut out, a guitar could be held neck down in the Troji.

This is a handy little bench troji I copied from one I saw in Rick Davis' shop.

Just some plywood scrap for the bottom and ends. 1/4" hardboard on the sides, and lined with cork and green foam from the fabric store.

I modified my binding cradle to have inserts on top of the holders so I can screw on a cap. Then the whole cradle attaches to the side of the bench. The guitar will almost stay put without the caps, but almost is not what any of us are after.
