Hi all, I know at one time when I was building much more regularly John Watkins (cnc guitar) sold some really nice cnc'd necks. I see his website in under mnx. Are there any small shops or sponsers that supply cnc necks? I'm familiar with Stewmac and LMI but was wondering who might sell necks that have additional options available such as different laminates or scale lengths? Cheers! John |

Not sure if you want CNC necks because you need a lot of them - or if you just want a good neck. I've used Hanalei-Moon to make my custom necks for me and have been VERY happy with the results. I got to send exactly what I wanted for my custom heel design. You get to pick from multiple layered necks and different volute designs (shapes). Great craftsmanship - and very good guy to work with. http://www.hanalei-moon.com/id1.html Highly recommended! |

For those of you who have used Hanalei Moon, how much work do the necks need when you get them? Are they pre-carved oversized and it is up to you to shape the profile and thickness, or can you specify a certain profile and just finish sand and fit the neck/block to the guitar? Thanks in advance! |

First recommendation is to visit the web site link I included in my first post. Most of your questions would be answered there. Then - if you have questions, call Chris at Hanalei or email him. There is very little to do to the necks when they arrive. The headstock is a "paddle" and you'll need to shape it to your specific design and apply your headstock overlay. You could have Chris do this for you - but we do our logo inlay on the overlays and choose to mount them after we get the necks from Chris. Varying neck thicknesses and profiles are available. You can't go wrong - and the prices to me seem very inline with the quality work he does. All the best! |

I just finished a guitar using a neck from Hanalei Moon and can't say enough about the value. It's beyond comfortable to play, and he had it made to my spec and shipped in less than a week. |

Chris at HM is the best! You would not believe the stuff he has done for me. BTW, he does not use CNC (last time I asked). The necks are sized precisely and the peghead is properly oversized for you to shape. Mike |

Paul, James, and Mike - thanks! Those are the things I was hoping to hear. I had been thinking about HM for a bit, but wanted to get some info from actual customers; people can say anything on a website. LOL It's apparent that Chris is a straight-shooter and does good work. John, sorry for the temporary hijack; you can have your thread back, now. ![]() |

Here is another vote for HM. I have used three of Chris' necks, all of which turned out very nicely, no need for tweaking. |

I use Chris' necks as well. And Mike, you are correct. Chris does not CNC the necks. But they are might fine! Ken |

I'm working on one now that will have a neck from Martin Guitarmaker's Connection, where they basically sell stuff that was rejected at the factory. Most of it is rejected for small, stable pin knots or tear-out, so most of it is quite usable if you're not making a Martin, and some things are very cheap there. In the case of this particular Spanish Cedar neck, some tear-out on the corner of the headstock landed it in the second-grade rack, making it even cheaper. I paid $20 for the neck. |
