I built a jig to cut the binding slots, now that is done and I am getting ready to cut the slot for the end graft. Now I realize that I need to make some sort of shoulder vise to hang onto the guitar body without damaging it. I have seen a few of them on here that clamp it to the front of a workbench. Can you show some pictures of what you are using? Thanks Mike |

That looks like a nice tool for this. I'm thinking of something smaller that will clamp to my work bench though. I am going to download the plans on my other computer because I think I will end up making one at some point. Thanks Mike |

I plan to make a trojy in the near future. However, if you have 6 cam clamps and a workbench you can fashion a holder ala Cumpiano. Two clamps laid flat on top of the workbench with cam arm extended beyond the bench to hold the body, two positioned beneath the bench top in the same manner, with both sets clamped down to the bench top via two more clamps holding the lower arms of the other 4 clamps. If you have Cumpiano's book, there is a good picture describing this. It's a bit hard to describe in words, but I can't post a picture at the moment. I will say it is a bit of a hassle positioning the clamps, but if all you need is a relatively quick way to hold the body to install the end graft, it's a viable option. I did it for my first with no problems. Be sure to put something soft between bench and guitar body, make sure your clamps are cork lined, and try not to place the clamps beyond the linings. |

Here's one way to do it. I use my long bar clamps, which go through a pair of holes in the table skirt, and extend under the work table through another pair of holes in a cross member there. This keeps them straight, and allows me to pull the "vise" out for better access to the instrument, if needed.

Mine is exactly the same as Arnt's. I got the idea from Sylvan Wells. It's a great design, simple to build, and works extremely well. The key is using 1/4" ply for the jaws as it can flex to follow various contours.

Some good Ideas here... Personally I like the Tony Karol model, fully equiped with a Joe bag... If Tony has a chance he may able to post a picture and instructions. Cheers - Luc |
