My wonderful wife got me the binding jig from LMI for Xmas. A couple of questions. What do you cut first? The purfling ledge or the binding ledge? And a bit of a generic question here. Anything in particular I should watch out for?

Thanks

Steve

I cut the side purfling ledge first, for two reasons. First, it gives me a relatively shallow cut to start.
I've had chipout problems if you try to take too heavy a cut. Second, if you cut the deep binding
ledge first, it's possible the "doughnut" on the router may ride a little too high or low on the remaining
top (or bottom) surface when cutting the purfling ledge, because the top/bottom is at an angle to the
sides. It depends on the contour of the doughnut, but I like to do the shallow cut first anyway, so it
makes sense to me to do it in that order.

Oh, and you do have a wonderful wife. Better keep her around!! [:Y:]

With the LMI cutter and bearings it really does not matter, I cut the binding 1st.
