I bought a number of large billets of big leaf maple and got a chance to see inside a few of them. These anolomies created some very nice bookmatched tops. There was enough left over to make these facings but I'm really not sure what I'm looking at here.

I've never seen green coloring like this before.

Is this spault or something entirely different?

Looks to me to be "Ambrosia" maple... Damage from the Ambrosia beetle.

Thanks

That's just mineral streaking, I think.
You see it a lot in poplar. It's common in the sugar maples as well.

Just looks like one of those normal maple steaks caused by a growing stress. Nothing out of the ordinary and normally are stable, very interesting to the eye and not pithy.

As a few of the other guys said it's just an inclusion, could be early decay and/or mineral streak. The dark area is heart.
You see a lot of little defects like that in maple (or beauty marks for more open minded people like yourself ;) ). Spalt wont generally show up until the tree has started to decay/rot.

Definately not ambrosia.

As some have said, it's an inclusion(very common in maple). It's usually softer than the surrounding wood so treat it that way when finishing. It can under cut somewhat.

Some people do not like "defects" in their wood. I happen to believe they offer a natural, aesthetic beauty … but this is always an eye of the beholder kinda thing.

...and they prolly keep their shoes precisely arrayed in their closets too. But I made a dozen of these facings and five of them are totally clear.....for the shoe guys :)
