I've only seen 2 LS tops but neither were very stiff at all - although the grain was pretty consistent. |

Even a few degrees off quarter can have a pretty big effect on cross-grain stiffness in redwood. Could that account for it? |

The LS tops I have seemed really stiff, but it's been a while since I handled them, and I haven't taken any close to final thickness yet. The grain's real consistent, though, I think. I need to get set up with a deflection test rig, it'll be interesting to compare. |

I have one LS top in my shop. The grain count does vary somewhat... 20 near the edges to 35-40 in the middle. It is incredibly stiff however. Stiffer by far than the other redwood tops in my stash. Stiffer than most of the spruce tops I have too, for that matter. I was planning on going .110-.115 with it. Certainly no thicker than .120. I think your comment about about top variance well taken. Best to work each top based on it's own characteristics instead of broad generalizations. |

The LS sets I have are very stiff in both directions, they are nicely quartered.....great taptone too. Greg |

Todd, Check with Lance. He has, and has had a pretty good supply of LS Redwood tops. He reserves them for his OMFS and E2 models only. Maybe he could add to the already good responses you've already received. Happy Holidays, Marc |

I have 8 LS tops left. Never had any that were floppy cross grain. Mine are consistently stiff cross grain and very even consistent grain count with LOTS of silking all the way across the face. As someone else mentioned redwood is very finicky and will go limp cross grain if a few degrees off 90*. |
