Who has used the "Golden Age Restoration" tuners?......if so? Are they worth the money or should I go with something else?
Thanks,
Jeff

I have only used them (the 1920's style) on one build...I like the look and they seem to work well.. I plan to try a set of the engraved style on a 12 fret build soon.

I have used them on four instruments now. I feel they're ok, not great mind you, but ok for inexpensive tuners. None have failed, no one has complained, but they are not 510's. They look great on an old fashioned (style) instrument. Try 'em, you might like 'em.

I use them all the time and they are of "vintage" quality, work OK, but don't be comparing them to Waverlys or Stay tites. There is some backlash, but not outrageous. They have a vintage feel and tune well. They are worth the $$ if you are looking for the "old timey" look. You also get the Stew-Mac "builder discount" if you have ordered 1K over the last year...

I'm going to try a set on a 12 string I'm building for my sister. First slotted headstock I've tried. I was certainly inspired by some of your Larson style 12 strings Haans although this one will be a more conventional shape.

Any tips on drilling the holes in the headstock for these? I was planning on making up a jig with bushings and drill inserts but wouldn't mind knowing how others are doing them?

Darrel I just use an inexpensive drilling jig that clamps on and centers the hole. I carefully lay out my locations and then move it from mark to mark. I do both 6 and 12 slot-heads that way, a bit slow but was in my budget and haven't had any problems. If you've got the bucks stew-mac makes both 6 and 12 drilling jigs for slot-heads, I believe that's what Haans uses. Be sure and drill the tuner holes before you cut the slots to prevent tear-out.

Thanks Joe. That's kind of what I figured. I didn't notice the Stew Mac jig for 12 string, but will go back and have a look.

I see the ones at Stew Macs are on clearance for $13. Not a bad price at all. Thanks for that Joe.

Thanks for the heads up Darrel, I didn't have one either and hadn't seen the close-out, so I ordered one.

Todd, I've always used 1/4" drilled holes for the golden age shafts on slotheads and they've worked fine. I guess that little bit of clearance helps with alignment on 3 or 6 on a plate tuners.

I ordered one too Joe, and well I was at it............well you know the drill, had to order a few other things to maximize the shipping benefits

I agree with you on the clearance issue, especially for on a plate tuners.

Todd, I do know the benefits of maintaining tight clearances and would be interested in any suggestions that would improve on the accuracy of drilling these holes. I believe I can be pretty precise, but can envision having to file out a hole or two if I were to drill smaller than .250". Would it mean machining a guide with the tighter tolerances?
